Prime Minister Narendra Modi is on a high profile visit to Assam today, landing at the Emergency Landing Facility on the Moran Bypass in Dibrugarh early this morning. The visit is drawing attention from across the country, not only because it comes on February 14, 2026, but also because of the range of projects that will be launched and showcased as part of the day long engagement.

The first big moment of the day was the landing itself, with the Prime Minister touching down on the specially designed Emergency Landing Facility, a first of its kind highway based runway built in coordination with the air force to support emergency operations and civil landings. Soon after, he witnessed an impressive aerial display featuring fighter jets, transport aircraft, and helicopters, a rare public demonstration of the country’s air defence and readiness.

After the aerial show, Modi moved on to Guwahati, where he will inaugurate and flag off development projects worth more than ₹5,450 crore. These include new infrastructure initiatives designed to strengthen connectivity, digital capacity, and urban mobility across the northeastern region. Officials said these projects reflect a push to improve quality of life and economic prospects across Assam and neighbouring states.

One of the key segments of the visit is the formal inauguration of the Kumar Bhaskar Verma Setu bridge over the Brahmaputra River, a structure that officials say will cut travel time and boost connectivity between important population and commerce centres. Observers say this bridge could be transformative for local economies, especially for communities that have long struggled with travel bottlenecks during the monsoon season.

The itinerary also includes the opening of temporary facilities for the Indian Institute of Management in Guwahati, which educators hope will attract more students and academic collaborations to the region. There are also plans for rehabilitation and upgrading of educational and data infrastructure that local leaders say will create jobs and expand opportunities for youth.

Throughout the visit, security has been tight and local enthusiasm has been noticeable. Assam residents lined parts of the road and waved as the Prime Minister’s convoy passed, with many recognising this visit as both symbolic and practical, a mix of national pride and local promise. Some have said they hope the projects will bring real change in daily lives, from better roads and schools to more predictable electricity and internet services.

As the afternoon progresses, Modi is expected to address a gathering of political workers and local officials, where he will stress unity, growth, and future plans for the region. For many in Assam, today’s visit is about more than infrastructure, it’s a statement that the Northeast remains firmly on the national development agenda.
