The United States has begun withdrawing nonessential diplomatic and military personnel from multiple Middle Eastern countries, citing rising tensions with Iran over its nuclear program. The State Department confirmed on Wednesday that staff and family members from embassies in Baghdad, Bahrain, and Kuwait have been authorized to leave. President Donald Trump, speaking in Washington, described the region as “dangerous,” noting that the decision to relocate personnel was made as a precaution. The US military echoed this stance, saying the move aims to ensure the safety of American citizens amid potential instability.
The drawdown comes as nuclear talks between the US and Iran appear to have stalled, with the sixth round of negotiations, planned in Oman, now in doubt. Trump, speaking on a podcast, expressed growing doubts about reaching a diplomatic solution, suggesting Iran is intentionally delaying discussions. Meanwhile, Iran maintains that its nuclear program is peaceful. Its officials warned the US against military threats, saying American bases in the region would be vulnerable in the event of conflict. Iran’s Defense Minister stated that any imposed conflict would result in heavier casualties for the US, urging Washington to pursue peace but affirming Tehran’s readiness to retaliate if necessary.
Amid the escalating situation, maritime security alerts were issued for the Gulf region, warning of potential disruptions. The UK Maritime Trade Operations center highlighted increased risk to ships navigating the Persian Gulf and surrounding waterways. The International Atomic Energy Agency may soon vote to censure Iran, which could trigger a reimposition of UN sanctions under the 2015 nuclear deal. Although Iraq’s government has reported no immediate threats, US Central Command and diplomatic missions are proceeding with caution, anticipating further developments in the coming days.
