Excessive Screen Time and Hair Loss

These days, social media has become a major part of our daily routine. The first thing many people do after waking up is check their phones, and throughout the day, they remain hooked to Instagram, WhatsApp, Facebook, and endless reels. But did you know that this habit is not just a waste of time — it could also be harmful to your hair?

Dr. Gaurang Krishna, a hair transplant and skin specialist, explains that excessive social media usage is causing young people to experience hair loss at an alarming rate. Earlier, hair fall was common around the age of 40-45, but now even people between the ages of 20-25 are facing this issue.

4 Major Reasons for Hair Loss Linked to Social Media Use:

  1. Lack of Sleep – Staying up late scrolling on your phone leads to insufficient sleep. This weakens the body’s repair process and results in hair fall.

  2. Stress and Anxiety – Constant worry about likes and comments, and the habit of comparing yourself with others, increases stress levels. Stress is a key trigger for hair loss.

  3. Lack of Physical Activity – Spending too much time on mobile devices reduces physical movement. This lowers blood circulation, which affects the supply of nutrients to hair roots.

  4. Impact of Blue Light – Blue light emitted from screens harms both eye and hair cells.

Simple Ways to Prevent Hair Loss:

  • Turn off your phone at least one hour before bedtime

  • Limit your daily screen time and take breaks in between

  • Practice daily walking, yoga, or meditation

  • Eat a nutritious diet, oil your hair regularly, and follow a proper hair care routine

Taking control of your screen time is not just good for your mental health — it's essential for your hair too.
