Political instability, scandals and public anger creates fire nostalgia for monarchy and Hindu state in Nepal.
Nepal is facing serious political turmoil. Rising unemployment, corruption scandals, and general distrust toward political leaders have stirred up public outcry and some people are now openly discussing bringing back the monarchy.
Over decades, Nepal has moved away from kingship. But now, with ordinary citizens feeling let down by current governments, there’s talk that perhaps a return to having a king along with restoring Hinduism as the state religion could offer a different kind of stability.
Much of the anger is directed at the “former heroes” of Nepali politics, those who once held power and claimed to represent the people but are now seen as out of touch or failing. Protests have turned violent in some places, reflecting deep frustration.
Those who support monarchy are blaming to past periods when kings played stabilising roles. They say that in moments of chaos, people want something familiar, something that feels like order. The idea of a Hindu state is also connected: for many, mixing religion with governance recalls traditional identity and unity.
But bringing back monarchy would be a massive challenge. It may mean constitutional changes, shifting political power in dramatic row. Many would oppose it including groups who fought hard in the past for democracy. It could deepen divisions and might not solve highlighting issues like corruption, joblessness, or weak democracy.
Still, the fact that this idea is being discussed so openly shows how frustrated people have become. As Nepal stumbles through uncertainty, longing for a past institution suggests how deeply politics is failing many of its citizens.
