In a devastating twist, a selfless act of love turned tragic in Pune. On August 15, Kamini Koamkar (42) donated part of her liver to save her husband, Bapu Balkrishna Koamkar (49), at Sahyadri Hospital. Within hours, Bapu succumbed to cardiogenic shock. A week later, Kamini initially recovering went into septic shock and multi-organ failure, passing away on August 22. 

The couple’s financial sacrifice underscores their desperation and hope: they had mortgaged their home and borrowed nearly ₹20 lakh to fund the surgery. They leave behind two children, a 20-year-old son and a Class VII daughter.

The health department swiftly issued a notice to Sahyadri Hospital, demanding detailed documentation including surgical videos, treatment records, and counselling notes by Monday morning. Authorities are reviewing the hospital’s transplant license and institutional protocols. The post-mortem is underway at Sassoon General Hospital, with additional chemical analyses pending. 

The Koamkar family, the family, which has been shocked by this dual damage, has alleged medical negligence. He says that after the post -mortem report, he will file a complaint with the police and take legal action.

Reacting to the crisis, Sahyadri Hospital expressed deep condolences, stating that all protocols were strictly followed. At the same time, the hospital also assured the investigating agencies to give full support. This heart-wrenching phenomenon raises uncomfortable questions on the risks of live-organs transplant, especially for healthy donors. As the investigation proceeds, the incident is a serious reminiscent of the fact that high-risk medical decisions are on transparency, expertise and vigilance.
