Haryanas DGP Shatrujeet Kapur was placed on leave following allegations in IPS officer Y Puran Kumars suicide note.
In a significant development, Haryana's Director General of Police (DGP), Shatrujeet Kapur, was sent on forced leave late Monday night amid growing controversy over the suicide of senior IPS officer Y Puran Kumar. The decision came after mounting pressure from many sides, including the deceased officer's wife, IAS officer Amneet P Kumar, and Dalit organizations, who accused Kapur and other senior officials of caste-based harassment and professional victimization.
Y Puran Kumar, a 2001-batch IPS officer, was found dead from a gunshot wound at their Chandigarh residence on October 7. A nine-page suicide note recovered from scene named Kapur, former Rohtak SP Narendra Bijarniya, and several other senior police and IAS officers, alleging systemic discrimination and harassment. The note also highlighted instances of caste-based bias, with Kumar saying that the system had failed them.
The revelation of the suicide note lead to widespread outrage, causing protests from Dalit groups and political leaders. Amneet P Kumar refused to allow an autopsy or cremation until action was taken against accused officials. Their steadfast stand, supported by public demonstrations, created a week-long deadlock, forcing the Haryana government to act decisively.
In response to the escalating situation, the state government not only placed DGP Kapur on leave but also postponed a major government rally in Sonipat, which was supposed to be addressed by Prime Minister Narendra Modi. The postponement showed the gravity of the situation and the government's intent to listen to concerns raised by public and bereaved family.
The controversy sparked a bigger debate about caste-based discrimination within police force and the need for systemic reforms. As the investigation continues, focus remain on ensuring justice for Y Puran Kumar and restoring public trust in state's administrative machinery.
