Vice President Jagdeep Dhankhar expressed concern over the alleged discovery of cash at Delhi High Court Judge Justice Yashwant Varma’s home and called for a meeting with Rajya Sabha leaders J.P. Nadda and Mallikarjun Kharge to discuss judicial accountability.
Dhankhar highlighted the Supreme Court's scrapping of the National Judicial Appointments Commission (NJAC) Act, which he believes could have addressed such issues. He emphasized the need for a transparent, accountable, and effective system in response to such incidents.
This comes after Congress planned to raise the issue in both Houses of Parliament. Congress MP Renuka Chowdhury submitted a motion in the Rajya Sabha to discuss judicial reforms, while MP Manickam Tagore sought an adjournment motion in the Lok Sabha.
The Supreme Court has launched an in-house inquiry into the cash allegations which came under light following a fire at Justice Varma’s residence on March 14.
