The Union government is likely to notify the appointment of three new Supreme Court judges today, marking a significant move in judicial appointments under CJI
The Union government is expected to formally notify the appointment of three new judges to the Supreme Court later today in a major development for the Indian judiciary. The appointments come just three days after the collegium’s recommendation and signal a swift and proactive start to Chief Justice of India Bhushan R Gavai’s tenure, who took office earlier this month. Sources confirmed that President Droupadi Murmu gave her assent to the recommendations on Wednesday, and the files were promptly sent to the Union Law Ministry for notification. The three judges are scheduled to be sworn in by CJI Gavai on Friday morning.
The judges set for elevation are Justice NV Anjaria, currently the Chief Justice of the Karnataka High Court and originally from the Gujarat High Court; Justice Vijay Bishnoi, Chief Justice of the Gauhati High Court with Rajasthan as his parent court; and Justice AS Chandurkar, a senior judge of the Bombay High Court. Their induction will bring the Supreme Court to its full sanctioned strength of 34 judges. This round of appointments underlines the collegium’s ongoing commitment to ensuring regional diversity and upholding judicial seniority. The five-member collegium, led by CJI Gavai, had made the recommendations during a meeting held on May 26.
Additionally, the collegium also recommended changes across high courts, including five new chief justices, four reshuffles, and the transfer of 22 judges. These changes reflect efforts to align judicial postings with administrative priorities and personal circumstances. The appointments come amidst efforts to improve transparency and public trust in judicial processes. Recent initiatives include publishing collegium resolutions, judges’ backgrounds, and asset declarations online. These measures follow heightened scrutiny due to recent controversies involving judicial integrity, including an inquiry into Justice Yashwant Varma.
