The Supreme Court mandates influencers like Samay Raina to post public apologies for offensive content targeting people with disabilities and urges self-regulat
In a notable push for accountability in digital content, the Supreme Court of India has directed prominent influencers including comedian Samay Raina to publicly apologize on their podcasts and platforms for mocking persons with disabilities, as part of the fallout from the "India’s Got Latent" controversy.
The Supreme Court clarified that freedom of expression cannot be spread to commercial expressions that degrade or harm the weaker sections. This is an important judicial stance, which reminds the creators that the effect also comes with the effect.
In parallel developments, the court urged the central government to make clear guidelines for online materials, especially on digital platforms where materials are shared for commercial benefits. This step is considered an important initiative towards ensuring accountability in India's rapidly growing influencer economy.
This ruling builds on an earlier advisory by the court in July, where it had already pulled up Raina and other creators for insensitive remarks and warned against unchecked commentary in the public domain.
Content creators are now on notice light-hearted humour does not excuse mockery or disrespect. The court’s decision stands as a reminder that the digital stage is powerful and must be handled with empathy, ethics, and respect.
