On Wednesday, May 21, 2025, the Supreme Court granted interim bail to Ashoka University professor Ali Khan Mahmudabad but refused to halt the two FIRs filed against him over social media posts concerning Operation Sindoor.
The Bench, comprising Justices Surya Kant and N. Kotiswar Singh, characterized the professor’s posts as “dog whistling.”
The court also instructed the Haryana Director General of Police to form a three-member Special Investigation Team (SIT) to investigate the allegations.
A day earlier, on May 20, a local court in Sonipat, Haryana, had remanded Professor Mahmudabad to judicial custody, denying the state police’s request for a seven-day extension of his police custody. The case is scheduled for a further hearing on May 27.
