A medium but intense earthquake tremors were felt in Delhi and surrounding areas on Thursday morning, causing thousands of people waking up from sleep. At 9:04 am, a 4.4 magnitude earthquake occurred near Jhajjar in Haryana, which was about 10 kilometres, this information was given by the National Centre for Seismology.

Buildings were shaken in many parts of Delhi, Noida, Gurugram, Faridabad, Rajasthan and Western Uttar Pradesh (including Meerut and Shamli). People were seen running out of their homes, offices and schools. Some people reported the wings swinging rapidly and the shaking of the shelves.

Emergency alerts from the NDRF advised residents to stay calm, move to open areas after tremors subsided, and avoid using elevators. Drivers were told to pull over safely rather than tension. Despite the strong intensity, no quick reports of structural damage or casualties have surfaced.
Experts remind us that Delhi falls in seismic zone IV, prone to moderate earthquakes due to fault lines beneath the region. While this morning’s tremor may not indicate a major quake is coming, it serves as a critical reminder: preparedness is key. Residents are encouraged to revisit safety protocols like “Drop, Cover, and Hold On” and keep emergency kits ready.

An official from the NCS noted that within a 50 km zone around Dhaula Kuan, Delhi has recorded over 400 tremors since 1993, ranging from 1.1 to 4.6 magnitude. That long history illustrates the importance of vigilance in urban planning and personal safety.

At present, life is returning to normal, but this event clearly underscores the need for awareness and readiness as Delhi part of a seismically active region continues to grow.
