Gang-rape survivor tells Calcutta High Court she is satisfied with Kolkata Police’s investigation, while court ensures independent oversight into case.
In a courtroom update on Thursday, the 24-year-old law student, victim of the June 25 gang rape at South Calcutta Law College, expressed her satisfaction with the Kolkata Police’s investigation so far, her counsel told the Calcutta High Court. While PILs proposed for a central agency probe are under review, both Justices Soumen Sen and Smita Das De were reassured of the victim’s faith in the current inquiry.
The incident involved four accused: alumnus and former staffer Monojit Mishra (31), students Zaib Ahmed and Pramit Mukherjee, and security guard Pinaki Banerjee. Police reconstructed the crime scene in a harrowing five-hour exercise and forensic findings biological and chemical align closely with the survivor’s account.
The High Court directed the state to file a detailed affidavit and to hand over a progress report to the victim’s counsel within four weeks. Meanwhile, four days after the crime, all accused were remanded to judicial custody until July 22, during which digital evidence is under examination.
Civil society and student groups, notably SFI, continue to call for a CBI-monitored inquiry, highlighting concerns over delays and potential favours. But for now, the survivor’s showed contentment represents both progress and hope in the handling of this sensitive case.
