President Droupadi Murmu arrives in Lisbon for a four-day state visit to Portugal and Slovakia—India’s first presidential visit in 27 years—amid shifting global
Droupadii Murmu, the Indian Pres arrived in Lisbon on Monday, 7 April, 2025, marking the first leg of her four day state visit to. Portugal and the Slovak Republic. This is the first visit by an Indian President in nearly 27 years, and hence has been seen as a strategic move.
She was received at the military airbase of Figo Maduro by the Ambassador of India in Portugal, Puneet R. Kundal and the Ambassador of Portugal in India, Joao Ribeiro de Almedia.
Her visit comes at a time of significant global economic change, with Donald Trump’s tariffs and the crashing of the global markets. It won't only reshape global trade and commerce but also India's growing engagement with the European Union.
President Sousa will hold a banquet in her honor where important discussions will take place.
“The President (Sousa) will also host a banquet dinner in her honour. The President will meet Prime Minister Luis Montenegro. She will also meet the Speaker of the Parliament of Portugal, Jose Pedro Aguiar Branco. The Mayor of Lisbon will also host a special event in her honour. President will also meet members of the Indian community in Portugal and she is likely to meet some Indian researchers from various universities and academic institutions,” Secretary Lal said.
