Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Tuesday expressed profound grief over the tragic deaths caused by a wall collapse at the Sri Varahalakshmi Narasimha Swamy temple during the Chandanotsavam festival in Visakhapatnam, Andhra Pradesh. The incident occurred around 2:30 AM, when a 20-foot-long temporary structure gave way due to heavy rainfall, killing eight people and injuring four others. The victims were reportedly waiting in a Rs 300 ticket queue at the time. Rescue operations are underway, with SDRF and NDRF teams deployed at the site.
In a social media post, PM Modi said, "Deeply saddened by the loss of lives due to the wall collapse in Visakhapatnam. My condolences to the bereaved families. Wishing a speedy recovery to the injured." He also announced an ex-gratia of Rs 2 lakh for the families of the deceased and Rs 50,000 for those injured, from the PMNRF.
Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister N. Chandrababu Naidu and former CM Y.S. Jagan Mohan Reddy expressed their condolences and urged swift support for the victims’ families. Authorities have begun investigating the cause, citing rain-induced structural weakening.
