Prime Minister Narendra Modi is set to inaugurate five new underground metro stations in Kanpur on Friday, May 30. These stations are part of the second phase of the Kanpur Metro project and are located in some of the city’s busiest and oldest areas, where elevated stations were not feasible. The expansion will increase the total number of metro stations in Kanpur from nine to fourteen, covering a total metro corridor length of 32 kilometers.

The newly inaugurated stations mark a significant milestone in Kanpur’s urban transport infrastructure. Unlike the first phase, which featured elevated metro stations, these five are fully underground, built in densely populated areas to ease traffic congestion. The modern stations feature air-conditioned environments, beautifully designed interiors, and are equipped with state-of-the-art facilities such as AC carbon dioxide sensors to optimize energy use. The metro trains themselves have a capacity of 765 passengers, are equipped with 24 CCTV cameras per three-coach train, and can reach speeds of up to 90 km/h.

In addition to improving commuter convenience, Kanpur Metro is committed to sustainability, with rooftop solar panels expected to save approximately 1.2 million units of electricity annually. The metro also offers unique amenities like reservable coaches for special occasions such as parties or pre-wedding shoots. With the inauguration, residents will enjoy a comfortable, efficient, and eco-friendly public transportation option, marking a major step forward for the city’s transit system.
