Prime Minister Narendra Modi is set to convene a crucial meeting of the council of ministers on June 4 at 4:30 PM, marking the first such gathering since India launched Operation Sindoor. The operation was initiated as a response to the deadly April 22 terror attack in Pahalgam, Jammu and Kashmir. Under Operation Sindoor, Indian forces reportedly targeted nine terror camps in Pakistan and Pakistan-occupied Kashmir (PoK), followed by countermeasures against subsequent Pakistani offensives. During a recent address in West Bengal, PM Modi reaffirmed that the operation was ongoing and emphasized that India had established a “new normal” in tackling cross-border terrorism.

The political atmosphere has grown tense, with the Opposition demanding a special parliamentary session to discuss the unfolding developments of Operation Sindoor and the broader security scenario. The demand intensified following an admission by Chief of Defence Staff General Anil Chauhan, who, while attending the Shangri-La Dialogue in Singapore, acknowledged that India had made early strategic errors in the operation—though he assured they were corrected. He also confirmed for the first time that India suffered losses, including jets, but refuted Pakistani claims of downing six Indian aircraft as "absolutely incorrect."

Congress President Mallikarjun Kharge strongly criticized the government, accusing it of misleading the public in the wake of General Chauhan's remarks. He urged the Centre to follow Pakistan’s lead in initiating open discussions on the operation. Kharge also targeted PM Modi for allegedly turning a blind eye to former U.S. President Donald Trump’s claims of mediating a ceasefire between India and Pakistan—allegations India has repeatedly denied as false. The June 4 meeting is expected to address both national security and political concerns surrounding the ongoing operation.
