Parliamentary Panel Seeks Updates on Air India Crash Probe
On Tuesday (July 8, 2025), a Parliamentary panel held a detailed discussion with senior officials from the civil aviation ministry, along with representatives from airlines and airports. According to sources, several Members of Parliament brought up the recent Air India crash, inquiring about the status of the investigation and when the final report would be available.
Panel members also voiced concern over the sharp increase in airfares to Srinagar following the Pahalgam terror attack in April, sources added.
Some members reportedly called for a thorough audit of the Bureau of Civil Aviation Security (BCAS). The meeting was convened by the Public Accounts Committee (PAC), chaired by senior Congress leader K. C. Venugopal. Key airline executives, including Air India CEO and MD Campbell Wilson, were also in attendance.
The fatal crash of an Air India flight bound for London Gatwick occurred shortly after takeoff from Ahmedabad on June 12, killing around 270 people. During the meeting, several committee members referenced the tragedy, with one specifically asking about the timeline for completing the black box analysis.
Concerns were also raised regarding the post-attack airfare hike on Srinagar-bound flights. The spike in prices followed government-imposed restrictions on Pakistan after the April 22 Pahalgam terror attack, which claimed 26 lives.
Senior officials from various agencies—including the Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA), Airports Economic Regulatory Authority of India (AERA), Airports Authority of India (AAI), AAICLAS, and BCAS—participated in the meeting.
According to the Lok Sabha website, the meeting was part of an effort to gather oral evidence from these bodies on the topic: "Levy and regulation of fees, tariffs, user charges, etc. on public infrastructure and other public utilities," with a focus on aviation-related entities.
