Amid the “cash-at-home” uproar, Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla initiates a judicial probe by a three-member panel to examine implications and pave the way for judge
In a decisive response to the "cash-at-home" controversy engulfing Justice Yashwant Varma, Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla announced on August 12, 2025, the formation of a three-member committee to thoroughly investigate the matter, signalling the formal start of potential impeachment proceedings.
The committee brings together distinguished names: Supreme Court judge Arvind Kumar, Madras High Court Chief Justice Manindra Mohan Srivastava, and senior advocate B.V. Acharya of the Karnataka High Court. Significantly, Chairman Birla also accepted the impeachment motion brought with the support of 146 Lok Sabha members, which reflects parliamentary support to justify the judge.
Addressing the Parliament, Birla said that "the removal process should begin," and emphasized the seriousness of the alleged misconduct of Justice Verma and the need for public trust in the judiciary. The panel has been instructed to submit its report as soon as possible; The impeachment motion will be postponed until this report is given.
This action follows the Supreme Court’s rejection of Justice Varma’s challenge to an earlier in-house inquiry report, affirming that procedural norms were followed and expressing concern that the judge’s actions “did not inspire confidence”. The in-house report had already recommended his removal due to serious misconduct.
By setting up this independent panel, Parliament has taken a significant stride toward reinforcing judicial accountability. As proceedings progress, the outcome may determine not only Justice Varma’s career but also the broader integrity of judicial oversight in India.
