Jammu and Kashmir Chief Minister Omar Abdullah on Friday called the Indus Water Treaty (IWT) the "most unfair document" for the people of the Union Territory, expressing support for the Centre's decision to suspend it following the Pahalgam terror attack. Speaking after a meeting with tourism and trade bodies, Abdullah said Jammu and Kashmir had never backed the treaty. The Centre’s measures included downgrading diplomatic ties with Pakistan and closing the Attari land-transit post.
Abdullah praised Syed Adil Hussain Shah, a ponywallah who confronted terrorists and was killed, calling him a symbol of Kashmiriyat. Maharashtra tour operators have pledged to support Shah’s family, covering educational expenses.
Participants at the meeting condemned the killings, focusing not on business losses but on solidarity with victims' families. Abdullah lauded this gesture and said economic concerns could be addressed later.
He also highlighted that a moment of silence was observed at Jamia Masjid for the victims, countering negative portrayals of Kashmiris in the media. On harassment of Kashmiris outside the region, he confirmed that Union Home Minister Amit Shah assured safety measures and coordination with other states is underway.
