The Madhya Pradesh High Court criticizes the FIR against Minister Vijay Shah for omitting his inflammatory remarks and announces it will oversee the investigati
On Thursday, May 15, 2025, the Madhya Pradesh High Court strongly criticized the State Police over the content of the FIR filed against Cabinet Minister Vijay Shah following his controversial comments about Colonel Sofia Qureshi. A Division Bench of Justices Atul Sreedharan and Anuradha Malik raised concerns that Shah’s inflammatory May 12 speech—widely circulated online—was not included in the FIR, which was filed just before midnight on May 14 at Manpur police station in Indore Rural, as directed by the court.
Justice Sreedharan expressed disappointment, saying the FIR was inadequately drafted and "vulnerable to being quashed" due to the lack of details linking the Minister's conduct to the charges under BNS Sections 152, 196(1)(b), and 197(1)(c). Though the State’s Advocate General claimed the court’s May 14 order was annexed to the FIR, the Bench insisted that this was insufficient.
“The content must be in the FIR. Annexing a court order isn’t enough,” said Justice Sreedharan, directing that the full May 14 order be incorporated into the FIR to prevent any “subterfuge.” Given the poorly drafted FIR, the court stated it would monitor the investigation, without encroaching on the police’s independence. The case will resume post-vacation.
