Following the Shillong honeymoon murder case, Meghalaya CM Conrad Sangma urges the public not to judge the state negatively, calling it a peaceful and safe tour
Meghalaya Chief Minister Conrad Sangma has issued a strong statement in response to the growing negative portrayal of the state following the recent "Shillong Honeymoon Murder Case." The case involves a woman from Indore, Sonam Raghuvanshi, accused of murdering her husband during their trip to the popular hill station. Amid rising concerns on social media labeling Shillong as an unsafe tourist spot, the Chief Minister called for restraint and fairness in public discourse.
Calling the incident an unfortunate but isolated crime, Sangma emphasized that such acts can occur anywhere in the country and should not be used to malign the image of an entire state. “Linking one criminal case to the law and order situation of Meghalaya is misleading and unfair,” Sangma stated. He expressed concern over the spread of misinformation online and highlighted the damage it causes to Meghalaya’s reputation as a peaceful and welcoming tourist destination.
Sangma further assured that swift action had been taken by state police, with the accused already in custody. He stressed the government’s continued commitment to ensuring tourist safety and maintaining public order. Appealing to citizens and media alike, the Chief Minister urged people not to generalize the state based on a single event. “Meghalaya remains a serene and safe place for all visitors. One tragic incident should not overshadow the true spirit of our people and our state,” he said. His remarks aim to counter the rising tide of viral social media posts misrepresenting Shillong as unsafe.
