Mastermind of Religious Conversion Gang Arrested; Adityanath Brands Him ‘Anti National’
In a major development out of Uttar Pradesh, the UP Anti Terrorism Squad has arrested Jalaluddin, also known as Chhangur Baba, the alleged mastermind behind a large-scale religious conversion racket. He was arrested from Balrampur along with his colleague Neetu (alias Nasreen) and since then he has been sent to judicial custody in Lucknow District Jail. The arrest took place after the allegations that the pair hatched a conspiracy to convert in a planned manner in which the weaker sections were targeted and forced to change religion through economic greed or pressure.
Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath has strongly condemned their actions, calling the case both anti social and anti national. He added that the gang’s properties will be seized under relevant laws and promised strict legal repercussions for all involved. This arrest follows a series of earlier detentions including Chhangur’s son Mehboob and associate Naveen alias Jamaluddin in April tied to investigations into a larger network suspected to involve nearly ₹100 crore in foreign funding and nearly 40 trips abroad.
According to police statements, the accused allegedly lured poor and elderly individuals, including widowed women, into religious conversions by offering money, promises of marriage, or through intimidation in clear violation of the Uttar Pradesh Prohibition of Unlawful Religious Conversion Act, 2021. Authorities are also probing how the gang operated internationally, with investigations pointing to frequent travel to Islamic countries and the use of religious influence networks.
Following the arrests, the Balrampur district administration bulldozed the gang’s illegal properties a mansion, a college, a hospital and a madrassa built on government land. Over ten bulldozers and security personnel were deployed to ensure a smooth demolition. The operation is part of a wider crackdown on illegal encroachments and forced conversions, signalling a zero-tolerance approach by the UP government.
As the legal and administrative fallout continues, this case has sparked national debate over forced conversions, anti-conversion laws, and the use of coercive tactics in religious matters. With strong statements from the Chief Minister and enforcement actions underway, the spotlight remains on how the state will handle similar cases going forward.
