West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee met a section of dismissed teachers at Kolkata's Netaji Indoor Stadium on Monday, pledging her support following the Supreme Court’s recent decision to cancel 25,752 school job appointments made via the 2016 WBSSC recruitment.
Mamata assured that eligible candidates would not remain jobless and hinted at alternate plans to retain them. "We’re not heartless. I might get jailed for this, but I don’t care," she stated, while criticizing the verdict as unfair to deserving candidates.
The apex court had cited large-scale fraud and irregularities in the recruitment process. Mamata claimed ignorance of the alleged scam and said she was wrongly dragged into it.
Meanwhile, BJP launched protests, with former MP Locket Chatterjee and BJYM workers detained during a march to Mamata’s residence. Suvendu Adhikari accused her of selectively supporting only a few. The 2016 drive had seen tampered OMR sheets and over-issuance of appointment letters, triggering the legal fallout.
