Madras High Court Restrains Activist from Defaming Vedic Scholar Dushyanth Sridhar
The Madras High Court has issued an interim injunction preventing temple activist Rangarajan Narasimhan from making defamatory remarks about Vedic scholar and orator Dushyanth Sridhar on social media platforms, particularly X and YouTube. The order will remain in effect until the court resolves a defamation suit filed earlier this year by Sridhar, who is seeking ₹1 crore in damages for alleged abusive and derogatory statements made by Narasimhan online.
 
Sridhar, who resides in Bengaluru, filed the suit in February and also requested permission to initiate the case in Chennai, arguing that many of his followers are based there and that part of the cause of action had occurred in the city. Senior counsel Satish Parasaran cited rulings from the UK House of Lords (Turner vs. Grovit, 2011) and the High Court of Australia (Dow Jones vs. Gutnick, 2022) to support Sridhar’s right to choose a convenient legal forum.
 
Agreeing with this reasoning, Justice K. Kumaresh Babu granted leave to file the case in Chennai on June 23, 2025, and ordered the court registry to register the suit. When hearing the plea for interim relief, the court gave Narasimhan four weeks to file a reply.
 
The judge noted that Narasimhan had admitted to making certain statements about Sridhar during earlier proceedings but claimed they were not defamatory. However, after reviewing the content, Justice Babu concluded that the statements appeared prima facie defamatory and granted the injunction.
 
Sridhar’s lawyer, advocate Rahul Balaji, told the court that Narasimhan routinely posts offensive content targeting various individuals. He presented screenshots of disparaging comments aimed at a senior advocate, apparently made to discourage the lawyer from representing Sridhar.
 
Justice Babu, deeming those remarks inappropriate, also restrained Narasimhan from making any statements in the future against legal representatives of his opponents in court cases.
