In compliance with a Supreme Court directive, Madhya Pradesh Police has formed a three-member Special Investigation Team (SIT) to investigate state minister Vijay Shah’s controversial remarks about Indian Army officer Colonel Sofiya Qureshi.

The SIT will include Inspector General (IG) of Sagar Zone Pramod Verma, Deputy Inspector General (DIG) of Special Armed Forces Kalyan Chakravarty, and Dindori Superintendent of Police (SP) Vahini Singh. The directive to establish the SIT was issued by Director General of Police (DGP) Kailash Makwana in accordance with the apex court’s order.

On May 19, the Supreme Court condemned Shah’s derogatory comments about Col Qureshi and directed the DGP to constitute an SIT by 10 AM on May 20.

The court also dismissed the apology offered by Shah, with Justices Surya Kant and N. Kotiswar Singh branding it as “crocodile tears” after reviewing both the footage of Shah’s statement and his apology.

Minister Shah had reportedly referred to Col Qureshi as a “sister of terrorists” in a speech on May 12 concerning Indian Army operations against Pakistan. Following a Madhya Pradesh High Court directive, an FIR was filed on May 14 in Indore under several sections of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS), 2023, including charges related to promoting enmity and undermining national unity.
