Lok Sabha passed the Waqf( Amendment) Bill in the early hours of Thursday, April 3, after a 12 hour long debate, with 288 members advancing for it and 232 voting against.
What's Waqf?
A Waqf is a charitable donation substantially in the form of property, made by Muslims. The proceeds from similar donations are used to maintain kirks, graveyards, orphanages and madrasas. Once a property is designated as a Waqf, it can not be transferred or vended.
The hours long debate saw the ruling government defending it by calling it salutary for nonages while the opposition called it “anti-muslim ”. In his reply to the debate, Union nonages Affairs Minister Kiren Rijiju said there's no place in the world safer than India for nonages since India’s a temporal country.
The bill will now move to the Rajya Sabha, where it's anticipated to suffer another lengthy debate. As per news agency PTI, eight hours have been allocated for the discussion.
The government introduced the revised bill after incorporating recommendations from the Joint Parliamentary Committee, which had reviewed the legislation first introduced in August last time. also, the Mussalman Wakf( Repeal) Bill, 2024 has also been approved by the Lok Sabha, following a debate that lasted nearly 12 hours.
