The Indian government allegedly plans a defence based administrative acquisition of an island of the Lakshadweep Islands. Strategic concerns and national security interests are being cited behind this. Although no official announcement has been made on this yet, officials say that discussion is going on at the highest levels of the Ministry of Defence and Ministry of Home Affairs.

The island in question, which remains unnamed in official briefings, is believed to be geopolitically sensitive due to its proximity to major international shipping routes and its potential role in maritime surveillance. A senior official involved in the process said, “This is not about civil development anymore. The focus is on defence and deterrence.”

Local residents and civil society groups have raised concerns about the implications such a move could have on the island’s traditional way of life. “We already face restrictions because of military zones near the coast. If they take over completely, we fear losing our land and culture,” said Abdul Kareem, a fisherman based in Kavaratti.

Environmentalists also warn that heavy military infrastructure could disturb the fragile ecological balance of the islands. “Lakshadweep is not just a security asset, it’s a natural treasure,” said marine biologist Dr. Leena Rodrigues.

This development has come to light at a time when India is taking widespread initiative to monitor the Indian Ocean region and increase logistic capabilities, especially after increasing tension and naval presence of foreign forces with China.

Officials say whatever steps are taken will be legally appropriate and security needs will be balanced with local interests. But many two-residents have been engulfed in more questions about the imagination of this defence centric future, whose answers are not yet clear.
