Chaos erupted in the Karnataka Assembly as BJP MLAs protested a mistaken belief about a reservation bill. Allegations of honey trapping further fueled tensions.
The Karnataka Assembly passed a finance bill on Friday amid chaos, as BJP MLAs mistakenly believed it to be the proposed four percent reservation for Muslims in government contracts. In protest, they tore and flung copies at the Speaker.
The controversial bill, reportedly under review, aimed to provide reservations to Muslims in state-awarded contracts. Meanwhile, the session was further disrupted by allegations of honey trapping, with BJP leaders brandishing CDs, accusing the government of blackmail and entrapment.
BJP MLAs stormed the well of the House, chanted slogans, and even climbed the Speaker’s seat. MLA Bharath Shetty defended the protest, claiming they were demanding a discussion on the honey trap scam rather than the reservation bill.
The Speaker’s Office later clarified that only the finance bill was passed. While Congress defended the reservation as promoting social justice, the BJP accused the ruling party of appeasement politics.
