A probe might be held against Justice Yashwant Verma since an unexpected amount of money was recovered from his residence.
Justice Yashwant Verma of the Delhi High Court has been transferred to the Allahabad High Court following a Supreme Court Collegium recommendation. The decision came after a fire at his official residence led to the discovery of a large amount of cash in multiple rooms.
Justice Verma was not in the city at the time, and his family alerted authorities. Firefighters, after extinguishing the blaze, found the cash, prompting Chief Justice of India Sanjiv Khanna to convene a Collegium meeting. While his transfer was unanimously decided, discussions are ongoing about a possible investigation and impeachment proceedings.
Some Collegium judges argue that merely transferring him could damage the judiciary’s credibility. They have urged Justice Verma to resign, warning that if he refuses, impeachment proceedings may begin in Parliament.
As per the Supreme Court’s 1999 in-house procedure, the Chief Justice first seeks an explanation from the accused judge. If needed, a panel comprising a Supreme Court judge and two High Court Chief Justices conducts a probe. Based on the findings, the judge may be asked to resign or face impeachment.
