To bolster its air defence capabilities, the Indian Army has successfully conducted high-altitude trials of the indigenous “Akash Prime” Air Defence System in Ladakh.
According to a senior official, the Army Air Defence Corps carried out the trials in coordination with Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO) scientists, who developed the missile. The two-day exercise took place at an altitude exceeding 15,000 feet in eastern Ladakh.
During the trials, Akash Prime achieved two direct hits on high-speed aerial targets in the thin air of the region. This advanced variant of the Akash system is set to be inducted into the Army as part of the third and fourth regiments of the Akash Air Defence Systems.
An enhanced version of the original Akash, the Akash Prime features an indigenously developed active Radio Frequency (RF) seeker that improves target accuracy, regardless of weather or terrain conditions.
Originally deployed during Operation Sindoor to neutralize aerial threats from Pakistan, Akash Prime delivered promising results, the official added.
The Akash platform is a medium-range, surface-to-air missile system designed to defend mobile, semi-mobile, and stationary military assets from various airborne threats. It can be effectively used at elevations of up to 4,500 meters and can strike targets within a 25–30 km range.
