On this Independence Day, Prime Minister Narendra Modi announced India’s ambitious Sudarshan Chakra Mission, a new defence mechanism envisioned to rival Israel’s famed Iron Dome. This mission isn’t simply a protective net it’s a symbol of self-reliance, blending high-tech surveillance, interception systems, and counter-attack capabilities under a homegrown umbrella.

Modi painted a vivid picture: “By 2035, I want to expand, strengthen, and modernise this national security shield… drawing inspiration from Lord Shri Krishna’s Sudarshan Chakra” This thinking goes beyond dependence on imports and brings changes in the direction of using innovation, engineering and manufacturing talent of Indian youth.

The proposed system aims to protect India's strategic installations, civil centres and places of worship from air, land and maritime threats. Actually, it is a modern patron, which is ready for intercepting and rebellion just like the multi-level defence system of Israel, which boasts over 90% success in intercepting rockets launched by Hamas and Hezbollah.

Modi also tied this mission to larger defence ambitions including developing a domestic jet engine and bolstering India’s defence manufacturing sector. This initiative builds on the momentum of recent military undertakings, such as Operation Sindoor, which Modi celebrated as giving a “severe blow to Pakistan”

More than a technical project, the Sudarshan Chakra Mission serves as a narrative of strength, sovereignty, and ingenuity. With a vision set for 2035, Modi’s plan heralds a future where India doesn't just import protection it creates it.
