India’s growing global diplomatic relations have given its passport a new recognition. According to the recently released Henley Passport Index 2025, India has jumped eight places to rank 77th—its highest leap in the past six months. The primary reason for this improvement is the addition of two new visa-free destinations—Sri Lanka and the Philippines—bringing the total number of visa-free access countries to 59.
Previously, India was ranked 85th, with visa-free access to 57 countries. Now, Indian travelers enjoy visa-free or visa-on-arrival access not only to popular destinations like Malaysia, Indonesia, Thailand, and the Maldives, but also to several countries across Africa and the Caribbean.
This advancement not only provides ease of travel but also strengthens India’s diplomatic influence globally. According to Dr. Juerg Steffen, CEO of Henley & Partners, the strength of a passport reflects the strength of a nation’s foreign policy.
Though India still trails behind wealthier and more developed nations, this steady progress indicates a positive direction.
Travel is now easier, with fewer documentation requirements, giving Indian citizens more freedom globally. Whether it's an emergency trip, business travel, or vacation—planning has become more convenient than ever.
