In a jaw-dropping incident at Mumbai International Airport, customs officials intercepted a female passenger arriving from Doha only to discover she was carrying an astonishing Rs 62.6 crore worth of cocaine. The Directorate of Revenue Intelligence (DRI) launched the seizure after acting on a credible intelligence tip-off.
Security teams discovered six boxes of Oreos and three boxes of chocolates in her luggage. On opening them, airport officers were shocked to find close to 300 capsules filled with a white, powdery substance forensically confirmed as cocaine totalling 6.261 kilograms. The passenger was promptly taken under police custody, and the narcotics were seized under the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances Act.
This incident marks one of the year’s largest cocaine seizures at an Indian airport. DRI officials noted the smuggling attempted via everyday container, was both brazen and clever, unknowing how traffickers continuously refine hiding strategies.
“Based on specific intelligence, we intercepted her upon landing," said a senior DRI officer. "The entire consignment was well-packaged and aimed to evade detection.”
The seizure not only dealt a blow to narcotics smuggling but also highlighted the proactive and effective role of Indian intelligence and customs in safeguarding national security. A DRI spokesperson reiterated that searching is ongoing to track the broader trafficking network behind this operation.
For passengers and airport staff, this serves as a stark reminder: the war against drug trafficking continues and the next clever smuggler may be just a box of biscuits away.
