Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma on Friday raised serious concerns over alleged foreign interference in state politics, claiming that more than 5,000 social media accountsmostly operated from Islamic countrieshave recently become active in support of the Assam Congress and a specific leader within the party. Addressing a press conference, Sarma stated that these accounts are primarily focused on a single leader from the Congress's state unit and avoid interactions with national party figures, such as Rahul Gandhi.

According to the chief minister, the accounts have reportedly originated from 47 countries, with the highest number traced back to Bangladesh and Pakistan. He asserted that while the accounts refrain from engaging with broader Congress content, they are consistently interacting with posts related to Assam Congress and the unnamed leader, believed to be newly-appointed state party president Gaurav Gogoi. The CM highlighted the suspicious nature of this behavior and said it appears to be a recent trend that began in the last month.

In addition to promoting the Assam Congress, these accounts have allegedly been sharing content related to Islamic fundamentalism, including pro-Palestine narratives and support for figures like Iran's leadership and Bangladesh’s Chief Advisor Prof Md Yunus. Sarma called this an unprecedented case of foreign engagement in Assam's political discourse and warned that it may impact the lead-up to the 2026 Assembly elections. Citing national security concerns, he confirmed that the central government has been informed about the matter. While no official investigation details have been released, the CM emphasized the need for vigilance as the state heads into a critical political phase.
