Indian woman falls from hotel during Kathmandu protests
A tragic incident unfolded in Kathmandu this week when a 55-year-old woman from Ghaziabad lost her life while trying to escape an folks attack at her hotel. Protests against the Nepal government had pumped, and a mob reportedly set fire to the Hyatt Regency hotel where the Indian couple, Rajesh Devi Singh Gola and her husband Ramveer Singh Gola, were staying.
Around 11:30 PM, spreading fire trapped them on the fourth floor. In desperation, Ramveer broke a window pane, tied together curtains and bed-sheets as a makeshift rope, and helped his wife attempt to escape. While descending, Rajesh Devi slipped near the second floor her grip giving way, possibly due to a prior injury to her hand and fell to the ground, suffering fatal head and back injuries. Ramveer followed similarly and was injured.
The Indian Embassy in Kathmandu, together with local Nepalese authorities, intervened to assist the family. Rajesh Devi was taken to TU Teaching Hospital but succumbed to her injuries. Videos circulating on social media back their account of the chaos. Meanwhile, authorities in Ghaziabad have assured full cooperation to bring her body home and offered support to the helpless husband.
This marks the first reported Indian casualty in the recent unrest at Nepal. The tragedy underscores the vulnerability of travelers caught in civil non-rest and make understand the importance of rapid assistance and diplomatic coordination in such emergencies.
