Mumbai Police files an FIR against comedian Kunal Kamra for allegedly defamatory remarks about Maharashtra's Deputy CM Eknath Shinde.
The Mumbai police on 24 March 2025, Monday filed an FIR against comedian Kunal Kamra on his allegedly defamatory remarks against Maharashtra’s deputy Chief Minister, Eknath Shinde, based on a complaint made by Shiv Sena MLA, Murji Patel.
Mr. Patel reportedly told the Hindu, that if an apology is not issued within 2 days, police action will follow. He added, “What he has said about our topmost leader is unacceptable. After seeing the clip, we went to the MIDC police station last night. I went at around 11 pm. I requested the police to take strict action against him,”
This statement follows the incident on March 23, 2025, Sunday night when Shiv Sena members damaged the Habitat comedy club in Khar, where the show had been filmed and the hotel whose premises the club was located in.
Mr. Kamra’s latest standup in which he allegedly referred to Deputy CM Eknath Shinde as “gaddar” or a traitor has drawn the ire of Shiv Sena. Mr. Kamra taunted Mr. Shinde using a modified version of a Hindi song from the film “Dil To Pagal Hai”, eliciting laughter from the audience. Based on the complaint, an FIR was registered in the early hours of Monday against Mr. Kamra under various Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS) actions, including 353(1)(b) (statements conducing to public mischief) and 356(2) (defamation), an official from MIDC police station said.
