On Tuesday (July 8, 2025), National Conference president  Farooq Abdullah strongly criticised the Election Commission’s decision to conduct a special intensive revision (SIR)  of electoral rolls in poll-bound Bihar, calling the move "anti-Constitutional."

Speaking at a party event in Kulgam , the former Jammu and Kashmir chief minister questioned how over 1.5 crore Biharis  living outside the state would manage to enroll themselves, vote, or obtain necessary documents such as death certificates for deceased relatives. “When B. R. Ambedkar drafted the Constitution, every citizen was given the right to vote. Now they’ve brought a new law that goes against that very principle,” Abdullah said.

He alleged the move was politically motivated, claiming it was designed to "please their master" even at the cost of constitutional values. “This is not acceptable to the people of India. If it’s forced through, there will be a larger movement to protect the Constitution—greater than previous agitations,” he warned. “May Allah give them the wisdom to uphold the Constitution,” he added.

The Election Commission (EC) had issued orders on  June 24 for a special revision of electoral rolls in Bihar, citing reasons such as rapid urbanisation, migration, a growing number of first-time voters, unreported deaths, and the presence of illegal foreign nationals on the rolls. The last such revision in the state was conducted in 2003.

Bihar is scheduled to go to polls later this year.
