A quiet neighbourhood in Delhi’s Lajpat Nagar was left shaken this week by a brutal double murder that has stunned residents and raised chilling questions about trust and safety at home.
Ruchika Sewani, a 42-year-old garment shop owner, and her 14-year-old son Krish were found murdered in their apartment on the night of July 2. What makes this tragedy even more horrifying is that the accused is someone the family knew and trusted 24-year-old Mukesh Paswan, their domestic help and an employee at Ruchika’s store.
According to police, the incident unfolded after Ruchika confronted Mukesh over repeated absences and his failure to return an advance payment of ₹40,000. What started as a scolding soon turned into a shocking act of rage. Investigators believe Mukesh first attacked Ruchika and then killed Krish, who tried to escape into the bathroom after witnessing the horror.
The scene, discovered by Ruchika’s husband Kuldeep when he returned home later that night, was deeply disturbing. Blood trails led to the gruesome discovery of his wife and son’s bodies. CCTV footage showed Mukesh leaving the building shortly after the crime. He fled by train toward Bihar but was apprehended at Pandit Deen Dayal Upadhyay Junction by UP Police.
During interrogation, Mukesh allegedly confessed his crime, saying he was humiliated and angry, who instigated him for this violent incident. The police have recovered the weapon used in the murder and is now investigating forensic evidence so that the investigation of the case can be completed.
This brutal incident not only shocks Delhi because of its cruelty, but also because it makes us feel the sensitivity of our security. This is a grief for the Sewani family that cannot be described in words. For the rest of the people this is a scary warning of relationships based on wrong belief.
