The Delhi Metro fare has risen by ₹1–₹4 (up to ₹5 on Airport Express)—a modest increase after eight years that still leaves commuters cautious.
Starting August 25, Delhi’s lifeline the Metro became a bit pricier. For the first time since 2017, fares have increased modestly: between ₹1 and ₹4 across various routes, and up to ₹5 on the Airport Express line.
Short trips under 2 km now cost ₹11 instead of ₹10; the longest distances now top at ₹64, up from ₹60. DMRC assures riders that these revisions follow standard calculation formulas and remain consistent with the Fare Fixation Committee’s recommendations.
To cushion the blow for regular riders particularly students and working individuals the smart card facility continues to offer a 10% discount per ride, with an additional 10% during off-peak hours. However, budget-conscious commuters voice concern: even small hikes, when multiplied by daily rides, take a toll especially for students and low-income travellers.
Student unions have demanded a rollback, calling the hike unjust and harmful to education and public welfare.
Despite mixed reactions, the Metro remains Delhi’s most efficient and budget friendly transport choice. While the fare increase is portrayed as essential to maintain services and infrastructure, many hope this will prompt better frequency and quality balancing affordability with progress.
