Defence Minister Rajnath Singh on Thursday called on the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) to oversee Pakistan’s nuclear weapons, following the recent end of the most severe military conflict between the nuclear-armed neighbours in nearly 30 years. Singh began a significant visit to Jammu and Kashmir to assess the security situation, particularly along the Line of Control (LoC) and the International Border.
Addressing Indian troops at Srinagar’s Badami Bagh Cantonment, Rajnath Singh questioned the safety of nuclear arms in the hands of what he described as an “irresponsible and rogue nation.” He advocated that Pakistan’s nuclear arsenal should be placed under IAEA supervision.
This marks the defence minister’s first visit to Jammu and Kashmir since Operation Sindoor. Senior military officials are expected to brief him on the current security environment.
Singh will evaluate the overall security situation and frontline troop preparedness at the Indian Army’s XV Corps headquarters in Srinagar. The Indian military carried out precise strikes on terrorist infrastructure on May 7, prompting Pakistan to launch attacks on Indian military bases on May 8, 9, and 10.
India responded strongly, targeting eight Pakistani air bases with missiles and long-range weapons on May 10 as retaliation for Pakistan’s strikes on 26 Indian military sites.
The military hostilities ceased following a mutual agreement after talks between the Director Generals of Military Operations from both countries on the afternoon of May 10.
