China slams Trump’s 50% tariff threat as "unilateral bullying" and pledges to retaliate. Beijing warns of broader countermeasures as U.S.-China trade tensions i
China vowed on Tuesday to "fight to the end" and retaliate against the U.S. after President Donald Trump threatened an additional 50% tariff on Chinese imports. Beijing’s Commerce Ministry condemned the U.S. tariffs as baseless and a form of unilateral bullying. It insisted China’s countermeasures were legitimate efforts to defend its sovereignty, security, and development. The ministry warned of more retaliation if the U.S. persists. Trump’s latest tariff threat—on top of previous levies—could raise total U.S. tariffs on Chinese goods to 104%, sparking fears of a worsening trade war.
On the streets of Beijing, some citizens expressed concern but remained confident in China’s resilience. Business owners reliant on U.S. trade, however, feared layoffs or closure. Experts noted China could retaliate further by suspending fentanyl cooperation or targeting U.S. service industries. Foreign Ministry spokesperson Lin Jian criticized Washington’s actions as lacking sincerity. In Hong Kong, Chief Executive John Lee labeled the U.S. measures as bullying and vowed to deepen ties with mainland China, promote free trade, and support local businesses against the tariffs.
