The Jammu & Kashmir Assembly witnessed chaos as opposition parties demanded debate on the controversial Waqf Act. PDP’s Waheed Para was removed from the House,
Jammu & Kashmir Assembly witnessed a high political drama on Tuesday, for the second time recently as the House descended into chaos after opposition parties continued with their strong demands for discussion on the contentious and very controversial Waqf Amendment Act, leading to a temporary adjournment.
A verbal fight broke out between lawmakers of the National Congress (NC) and the People's Democratic Party (PDP), with members exchanging sharp barbs over implementation and implication of the Waqf Act which was passed in Parliament last week.
The People's Democratic Party (PDP) and the Awami Ittehad Party had submitted an adjournment motion to discuss the Waqf Act, but it was rejected by the Speaker, leading to a heated protest in the Assembly. Several MLAs raised slogans in dissent, and PDP legislator Waheed Para was eventually escorted out of the premises.
Reacting strongly, former Jammu and Kashmir Chief Minister and PDP president Mehbooba Mufti criticized the Speaker’s decision on X, calling it a “direct assault on the rights, beliefs, and dignity of 24 crore Muslims in India.” She emphasized that the Waqf issue goes beyond religion and urged the Muslim-majority region of Jammu and Kashmir to stand up for its people’s rights.
Mufti also revealed that the PDP has submitted a new resolution on the issue and called on the Chief Minister, the Assembly, and the J&K government to show determination in defending public interests.
