In a major offensive against cyber-enabled financial fraud, the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) launched coordinated raids across several Indian states on May 28, 2025, under its ongoing anti-cybercrime initiative, Operation Chakra V. The crackdown covered 19 locations across Delhi, Haryana, and Uttar Pradesh, resulting in the arrest of six individuals and the dismantling of two illegal call centres involved in an international scam.
The operation targeted a sophisticated scheme that defrauded Japanese citizens through fake tech support services. Posing as representatives of major tech companies—especially Microsoft—the fraudsters convinced victims their devices were compromised. They then manipulated victims into transferring funds into "mule accounts" managed by the criminal syndicate.
The CBI launched its probe after receiving actionable intelligence regarding a cybercriminal network targeting foreign nationals while operating under the guise of legitimate customer service centers.
The CBI worked closely with Japan’s National Police Agency and Microsoft Corporation to unravel the network. This international collaboration was instrumental in identifying the syndicate’s structure and locating its key operatives. The coordinated action not only disrupted the scam but also underscored the growing importance of global partnerships in tackling cybercrime.
During the raids, authorities seized significant digital and physical evidence. Preliminary investigations revealed the group relied heavily on advanced social engineering and technical deception to obtain victims’ personal and financial data.
The six arrested suspects are:
Ashu Singh (Delhi)
Kapil Ghakhar (Panipat, Haryana)
Rohit Maurya (Ayodhya, Uttar Pradesh)
Shubham Jaiswal (Varanasi, Uttar Pradesh)
Vivek Raj (Varanasi, Uttar Pradesh)
Adarsh Kumar (Varanasi, Uttar Pradesh)
The success of Operation Chakra V showcases the effectiveness of cross-border cooperation in combating the rising threat of cyber fraud.
