A tragic incident unfolded early this morning in Vadodara district when a portion of the Gambhira Bridge over the Mahisagar River collapsed near Padra-Mujpur. At least eight people lost their lives, and ten others were injured as vehicles including trucks, vans, and autos plummeted into the turbulent waters below.

The collapse occurred around 7:30 AM, catching commuters off guard. Visuals from the scene show a tanker dangling precariously and other vehicles submerged, while individuals trapped inside cried out for help. NDRF teams, including the local fire department, police, and the rescue, rushed to the site to conduct search and rescue operations.

District Collector Anil Dhamelia confirmed that five injured people have been taken out and admitted to nearby hospitals, while relief and rescue operations are still going on due to the possibility of some people being trapped. The bridge collapsed a significant contact route between Central Gujarat and Saurashtra, causing severe questions to be severely affected and the structural strength of this four -decade -old bridge raised serious questions, which was repaired last year last year.

Chief Minister Bhupendra Patel has directed a full investigation into the collapse and deployed technical teams to assess damage and ensure no further sections are compromised. However, authorities have cordoned off the area and advised commuters to avoid the route until it is deemed safe.

This horrific accident occurred at a time when concerns are increasing in the whole of India about the growing infrastructure. Amidst the tragic echo of previous tragedies like Morbi Bridge accident, this incident of Gambhira Bridge is a tough and clear indication that the cost of delay in maintenance has to be paid by humans. Now the state government will have to take immediate action so that the public confidence can be restored again and roads can be safe for the citizens.
