BJP labels Congress flip‑flop on Aadhaar‑voter ID linkage shameless. The term flip‑flop captures the inconsistency without altering its meaning.
The BJP on July 11 accused the Congress of a glaring flip‑flop on Aadhaar‑voter ID linkage during Bihar's Special Intensive Revision (SIR). BJP leader Amit Malviya called it a “shameless flip‑flop,” recalling Congress's vehement opposition to the same idea in 2021, when they branded it a privacy threat. Now, they seemingly support it.
This debate stems from a Supreme Court suggestion that the Election Commission should consider Aadhaar, voter ID, and ration card for verifying voters. The EC had already incorporated these documents into SIR forms distributed to 7.9 crore Bihar voters since June 24.
Opposition leaders, including Tejashwi Yadav, welcomed the court’s guidance as a check against disenfranchisement of marginalized voters. Yet BJP’s critique centers on policy consistency, with Malviya recounting: “2021 Congress protested inside Parliament… 2025 Congress wants Aadhaar to verify Voter ID… shameless flip‑flops.”
Congress argues the issue is about protecting voter privacy and rights. They notify that an aggressive SIR could exclude migrant and rural voters if acceptable IDs are limited.
This hit underscores the tension between electoral integrity and personal data privacy. With Bihar elections approaching in November, both sides are preparing narratives that may shape public perceive. The BJP aims to portray itself as the loyal defender of coherent reform, where Congress positions itself as champion of marginalised voters.
As Bihar’s SIR rolls forward under SC scrutiny, the flip‑flop allegation could influence campaign rhythmic. The coming weeks may determine not just electoral rolls, but also voter trust and political capital.
