Prime Minister Narendra Modi's recent Trinidad and Tobago tour was not just a diplomatic visit, but it was an emotional festival of shared heritage. As a strong signal, Modi called Trinidad and former Prime Minister of Tobago Kamla Persad-Bissessara “Bihar ki beti, " and honoured the roots of the ancestors in Buxar (Bihar). These words were not limited to politics only, but reached the hearts of people of Indian origin in the entire Caribbean region and joined emotionally.

The moment Kamla was welcomed with a traditional Bhojpuri chautaal at Port of Spain, the air was filled with cultural pride. Modi’s warm recognition of her Indian lineage brought tears to many eyes in the crowd, many of whom are descendants of indentured laborers who had left India over a century ago in search of new beginnings.

To mark this deeply symbolic occasion, Modi gifted a replica of the Ram Mandir and sacred water from the Sangam at Maha Kumbh and the Sarayu River. He invited Kamla to offer this water at Ganga Dhara in Trinidad, linking spiritual traditions across continents.

During his speech, Modi stress on that nearly 40% of Trinidad and Tobago’s people has Indian ancestry, specifically from Bihar and Uttar Pradesh. From the names of streets to the sounds of bhaitak gana and celebrations of Navratri, traces of India live vibrantly in everyday Caribbean life.

Taking it a step further, he announced that sixth-generation Indian descendants in Trinidad will now be able for Overseas Citizenship of India (OCI) cards, strengthening emotional ties with their ancestral homeland.

PM Modi’s visit wasn’t just about diplomacy it was about identity, belonging, and honouring a journey that began generations ago but still beats strong in the hearts of many.
