The population of Asiatic lions in Gujarat has risen to an estimated 891, up from 674 in 2020, according to a census conducted earlier this month, officials announced on Wednesday (May 21, 2025). Chief Minister Bhupendra Patel confirmed the increase and noted the lions’ expanding range beyond their traditional habitat in Gir National Park to 11 districts across the Saurashtra region, including non-forested and coastal areas.
According to the Gujarat Forest Department, the latest count includes 196 males, 330 females, 140 sub-adults, and 225 cubs. While 384 lions were found within Gir National Park and Wildlife Sanctuary, 507 were recorded outside in areas like Pania, Mitiyala, Girnar, and Barda sanctuaries. Notably, 17 lions were counted in Barda, near Porbandar, and a pride of 17 was seen in Bhavnagar.
The 16th lion census, held from May 10–13, covered 35,000 sq km across 58 talukas with the help of 3,000 volunteers. Using the direct beat verification method, the census employed GPS tracking, camera traps, and radio collars to ensure accuracy. Volunteers recorded detailed observations, including movement, age, sex, and unique markings to help track individual lions.
