On March 25, 2025, the Allahabad High Court Bar Association began an indefinite strike in protest against the proposed transfer of Delhi High Court Justice Yashwant Varma to Prayagraj. Bar Association president Anil Tiwari clarified that the protest was not against any individual judge but against corruption and a lack of transparency in the judicial system. The association demands the reconsideration and withdrawal of the transfer order.
The strike follows the Supreme Court collegium’s decision to recommend Justice Varma’s transfer amid an inquiry over allegations of large sums of cash found at his residence after a fire on March 14. Justice Varma denied the allegations, calling them part of a conspiracy to tarnish his reputation. He also rejected any involvement in the cash discovery.
The Bar Association vowed to continue the strike until a resolution is reached.
