An Air India flight bound for New Delhi was forced to return to Phuket on Friday after receiving a bomb threat, prompting an emergency landing and evacuation of passengers. Flight AI 379, carrying 156 people, took off from Phuket airport at 9:30 a.m. local time but made a wide turn over the Andaman Sea before returning to the Thai island. The incident triggered emergency protocols, with all passengers escorted safely off the plane, according to Airports of Thailand (AOT) officials.

Authorities have not disclosed specific details about the nature or origin of the bomb threat, and investigations are ongoing. Despite repeated media inquiries, Air India has yet to issue an official statement regarding the event. Flight tracking services like Flightradar24 confirmed the flight’s unusual route back to Phuket, where local airport staff swiftly implemented safety measures. Officials emphasized that the evacuation was conducted without incident, ensuring passenger safety amid heightened caution.

This episode adds to a growing number of security concerns faced by Indian carriers, which experienced nearly 1,000 hoax bomb threats in the first ten months of last year aloneten times the figure recorded in 2022. The emergency landing also follows closely on the heels of a tragic Air India crash in Ahmedabad, which claimed over 240 lives. While unrelated, the two events have intensified scrutiny on aviation safety, underscoring the challenges faced by airlines and authorities in maintaining secure travel environments.
