The AAP announced it will not contest the MCD mayoral elections on April 25, citing BJP's alleged rigging and councillor poaching. AAP vows to serve as a strong
The Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) has decided not to contest the upcoming mayor and deputy mayor elections in the Municipal Corporation of Delhi (MCD), scheduled for April 25. At a press conference, former Delhi Chief Minister and Leader of Opposition Atishi stated that AAP will serve as a strong opposition in the MCD. She alleged that the BJP resorted to rigging and poaching councillors even after losing the MCD elections, adding that AAP does not support sabotage or horse-trading in politics.
Atishi urged the BJP to now run its "triple engine government" and deliver on its promises to the people of Delhi. AAP Delhi unit chief Saurabh Bharadwaj, also present, accused the BJP of manipulating the delimitation process and attempting to delay elections. He further claimed that BJP councillors had disrupted MCD meetings.
Given the ongoing defections and disruptions, Bharadwaj said AAP has chosen not to field a candidate this time. The BJP currently holds 119 seats in the MCD following recent defections. As per a notice from the MCD Secretary, the mayoral elections will take place at 2 pm on April 25.
